Study on Sports/Physical Culture and Community Research summary ① Study on the generation and development of sports culture in the globalization process ② Study on the character and role of the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB) ③ Study on sports and physical culture, and its cooperation and publicness This study is to light up the multi-dimensional process of globalization using rugby football, a sport that was born in England in the latter half of the 19th century and has spread throughout the world. We focus on the trans-national controlling organization called the International Rugby Football Board that controls the way the world’s rugby should be, and while keeping an eye on this “private” organization and its relationship with media and global capital, will target to clarify how it has been formed historically, by the activities of its various actors and the logic of connotation and exclusion. In addition to research centered on this international organization, studies are conducted in the migration of South Pacific island rugby players into the Japanese society in recent years, the high-aged rugby players unique to Japan, and the preservation activities of traditional arts of Kyoto as well. Here, we aim to critically recapture the promotion of sports and physical culture in the citizens’ sector that is normally spoken affirmatively within the context of revitalization and recovery of cooperation and publicness, using the help of political economics.
