With the aim of setting Moonshot targets, experts get together from around the world to discuss how to set goals that will contribute to solving social problems and how to proceed with research and development activities to achieve the targets. JST: About Moonshot International Symposium Outline of Moonshot Research and Development Program Japan is currently facing many difficult issues, and science and technology are required to boldly take up the challenge of solving these issues and pioneering a vision for the future society. In addition, it is required to speedily implement the results of original research that has the potential to revolutionize future industry and society (creation of disruptive innovations) in industry and society and develop such research on a global scale. In light of this situation, the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI) established the "Moonshot Research and Development Program" as a way to promote challenging research and development with the aim of creating disruptive innovations originating in Japan. Based on the Moonshot target determined by CSTI and the research and development concept formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under this program, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), a national research and development organization, will conduct challenging research and development to achieve the Moonshot goal (Moonshot Research and Development Program).
