I had served as a TV director and producer for NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) many years before I became a media studies scholar. I directed numerous news and documentary programmes, particularly international news coverage of the 9/11 attacks, Israeli?Palestinian conflict, UNESCO World Heritage sites, NASA Space Shuttle launches, and the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Japan. During my career as a TV journalist, I developed an academic interest in the manner through which media industries integrate collective interests and memories into media narratives. Hence, I pursued a postgraduate course at the University of Leeds in the UK. After completing my MA, I continued my research in the said field while also directing and producing various television programmes. After I left NHK, I became a media studies scholar in Japan and turned my full attention to academic endeavours. I then returned to the UK to engage in media studies, for which I received a PhD at SOAS, the University of London. At present, I am a professor in media and cultural studies at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan.Although my current research interests are diverse and not limited to TVjournalism, they could be classified broadly into three areas as follows.■Memories, Past, Modernity, and MediaMy major research interest is the manner through which visual media products, such as films and television programmes, represent and make sense of the past, particularly the recent past that people experienced in their actual life histories. For example, there has been a recent ‘boom’ in the number of Japanese media representing a deeply nostalgic longing for the Japanese ‘heydays’ of high economic growth in the 1960s and occasionally the 1970s. I have explored why nostalgia has been sparked at this particular historical juncture and how that period is represented in the media today. Although the nostalgic media renderings are generally believed to be ‘sweet’ and ‘harmless’ consumer products, I have clarified that the nostalgic media’s continued adherence to the recent past does not merely represent a simple yearning for that time; to some extent, it also reflects a deep-seated discontent with the Japanese modernity and post-war society.■Media Narratives after Catastrophic Disasters and Social ChangeWhen catastrophic disasters occur, such as wars, huge earthquakes, and unprecedented terrorism, media industries tend to become active in creating narratives about them. (A recent example is the U.S. media after the 9/11 attacks.) My research interest is on the manner through which media narratives assess people’s experiences of catastrophic disasters and provide an ethical solution to past events. I am likewise interested in tracing a kind of genealogical transformation of media genres (e.g. horror films, domestic drama) after such catastrophic disasters. My current research focuses on Japanese films, documentaries, and television dramas after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima nuclear power plant accident last March 2011.■Application of “Radical Democracy” to Media and Cultural StudiesAlthough the idea of “radical democracy” proposed by post-Marxism political theorists Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe has greatly influenced fields of political theory since the publication of their classic Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical Democratic Politics in 1985, their argument has hardly been applied to the analysis of media content even if the idea is basically discourse theory. I have been exploring the possibility of applying the concept of “radical democracy” to actual media, film and discourse analysis. © Ritsumeikan Univ. All rights reserved.
