2024.02.16 フェリス女学院大学との交流会：ともに平和を学ぶ 英語系 At the beginning of the year, we introduced Atsushi Awazuhara, a new member of our department. In this article, he explains about one of the wonderful opportunities for exchanges of ideas held on HJU campus - a "peace event" held with Ferris University.（今回の学科ニュースでは、2023年4月に国際英語学科に加わったもう一人の教員、粟津原淳先生に、平和に関する交流活動の様子を紹介していただきます。） フェリス女学院大学・国際センターと広島女学院大学・宗教センターとの平和学習が2月1日に行われ、国際英語学科の一年生6名が参加しました。このプログラムはフェリス女学院大学が「ジャパンスタディツアー」として広島を訪問するのにあわせて、本学の学生と交流をはかるものです。フェリス女学院大学側の参加者は留学生9人（中国、台湾、韓国、フィリピン、スロバキア）、日本人学生7人、教職員4名でした。碑めぐり学習のコーディネーターである高橋信雄先生（原水爆禁止広島県協議会・代表理事）と小西ヒサ子先生（被爆体験伝承者）および被爆証言者の三戸栄子氏からお話を伺い、国際英語学科の学生たちにとっても貴重な機会となりました。 交流会の一部では、三戸氏から被爆後の様子を描いた紙芝居とともにお話を伺いました。4歳のときに爆心地から1.2キロの自宅で被爆し、母親と姉たちとともに市内および9キロ離れた五日市等を大変な思いをしながら避難したこと、「兵隊として徴収されていた父が帰らなかったら、海へ飛び込もう」と母親が語っていたこと、終戦後に復員した父親が家族のためにバラック小屋を建てた際には、あたり一面に遺骨が広がる中で建築材を集めたことなど、被爆後の悲惨な状況を語ってくださいました。 原爆は一度落とされたらそれで終わりではないこと、被爆の後遺症は本人ばかりでなく、その子どもや孫など世代を超えて身体的・心理的な苦しみを生むこと、被爆したという過去がその後の人生設計に多大な影響を及ぼすことなどを、学生たちは真剣な面持ちで聞き入っていました。 交流会の後半では学生たちのディスカッションが行われ、講師の先生方も加わっていただいて活発な意見交換の場となりました。 一つ目のディスカッション「自分の受けてきた戦争・平和教育とはどういうものか」では、広島と他都道府県出身者および留学生たち各々が受けてきた教育には、同じテーマであっても伝える内容や情報量に違いがあること、戦争をどの立場から考えていくかといった意見が語られていました。 例えば、N.T.さんはこんな思いを持ったようです。「広島で育つ者の義務として、私たちは当たり前のように原爆について学んできましたが、県外の人は受験勉強のために、数ある歴史の一つとして学んでいたことを知りました。また、中国や韓国の方々は原爆についてだけでなく、日本から受けた被害について多く学んできたと話していました。このことから、被害だけを知るのではなく、加害者側でもあるという過ちも受け止めて、今後戦争や平和について考えていくべきだと強く思いました。この経験を通して原爆についての考えが変わりました。」 二つ目のディスカッション「未来のためにできること」では、現在の大学生たちは被爆した方々から直接話を聞くことのできる最後の世代かもしれないという危機感をもって、核兵器の恐ろしさを次の世代へ伝えていくことが大切ではないかといった意見や、戦争は国同士が行うものだが、一個人が他国の人々と友人になることで、相手の国の人々が戦争によって傷つくことを現実的に想像できるのではないか、そうした個人的な結びつきが戦争に反対していくことへの動機となるのではないかといった意見が交わされていました。 参加した学生たちにとって今回の交流会は、原爆についての認識は育った環境や各国の教育方針によって異なっているという気づきの機会となり、あらためて広島で生活していることについて思うことの多い経験となったようです。 Awazuhara sensei has had a busy first year on campus and has already become a much-valued member of the Department of International English. Here are her thoughts.（2023年4月に国際英語学科に仲間入りしたÁgota Duró先生に、この1年間を振り返ってもらいました。） Ágota Duró on campus on a blue-sky day It has been almost a year since I started teaching at Hiroshima Jogakuin University, but it seems like only yesterday. During my first year I was in charge of many English classes, which meant that I had the opportunity to teach and get to know a lot of students. Depending on their major, students had different interests, but I built a strong bond with them through various group activities, which meant that even those students previously not interested in English began to enjoy the classes. Teaching the English classes has been a very fulfilling, precious, and rewarding experience. The students also used an online library system called "XReading" and read short books on various topics every week. Learning English is a gradual process but "XReading" undoubtedly helped students increase their vocabulary as well as their reading speed in English.（1年はあっという間でした。基礎英語の授業を担当し、専攻も興味も異なる様々な学生を指導しました。英語が苦手な学生が、徐々に授業を楽しんでくれるようになり、私も達成感を感じています。基礎英語では、「Xリーディング」というオンライン上で英語の読書ができるツールを使っています。おかげで、学生たちの語彙力や読むスピードがどんどん向上しています。） Besides the English classes, I had the chance to interact with students from Bowling Green State University (USA) and give a lecture to them on various perspectives related to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Since Peace Studies is my specialty, this experience helped me prepare me for my upcoming Peace Studies courses that I will teach next year at HJU.（英語以外の授業も担当し、提携校の米国ボーリング・グリーン州立大学の学生たちが来学した際には、私の研究分野である平和や原爆に関する講義を行いました。2024年度からは、女学院でも平和学の授業を担当します。） I also appreciate the various campus events (such as Orientation Camp, Halloween, and Ayame Festival) in which I could participate and build a good relationship with many students and colleagues. During the Open Campus events and Open Seminars, I could get to know prospective students, and I was always delighted to see how enthusiastically they learn English and take part in various group activities. Additionally, I was in charge of the English Café during the second semester, and every week some lovely and smart students visited my office. We always had a lot of fun while practicing English conversation and learning new words. What made me even happier is that one very talented student eagerly learned Hungarian with me, which is my native language.（大学では授業以外にも一年を通して様々なイベントがあり、在学生とはもちろん、本学を志望する高校生と英語で話をしたりして楽しみました。特に嬉しかったことは、学生の一人が私の母語であるハンガリー語に興味を持って学び始めてくれたことです。） Since Hiroshima Jogakuin University is a Christian university, it organizes various events and talks related to Christianity on a weekly basis, which I mostly tried to attend and as a result could gain new perspectives. Outside my teaching hours, I had the opportunity to make further progress in my research, attend academic conferences, and participate in an educational workshop in Hokkaido. Additionally, my doctoral dissertation will be published as a book by Lexington Books, an American academic publishing company, presumably next year. I am really grateful to Hiroshima Jogakuin University for the supportive environment that enables me to continue my research.（平和学に関する研究活動も進めています。そして、私の博士論文が、この度アメリカの出版社から出版されることになったのです。） In retrospect, this has been a wonderful and very fulfilling year and I honestly enjoyed every day at Hiroshima Jogakuin University. Not only could I build positive and friendly relationships with many of the students and my colleagues, but I could also gain valuable teaching experience. They did a fantastic job in bringing to life their experiences in San Marcos (California, USA) and on the GO Program in Kelowna (British Columbia, Canada).（留学報告会の様子をご紹介します。今回は、アメリカのカリフォルニアで2週間、カナダのブリティッシュ・コロンビア州で4ヶ月、語学留学を行なった学生たちが、それぞれの素晴らしい経験を報告してくれました。） Students explain what it was like to study in California We first heard from the California group who spoke enthusiastically about their classes at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), campus life, homestays, and all of the cultural experiences that made their time in the USA so worthwhile.（アメリカでの研修では、カリフォルニア州立サンマルコス校での授業、キャンパスライフ、ホームステイ、文化体験など、すべてが思い出深い経験となりました。） All eyes on the screen It was clear that this study abroad program in California had a great impact on our students, but it was also wonderful to hear that our students were able to introduce Hiroshima and Japanese culture to students around the world - a truly enriching, cross-cultural experience for all.（中でも、日本や広島の文化を紹介したりといった異文化交流は印象深い時間になったようです。） The presentations took place on a cold, snowy day here in Hiroshima, but for the students who had just come back from Canada perhaps it didn't seem so cold.（報告会のこの日は雪となりましたが、続いて発表したカナダ留学から帰国したばかりの学生たちにとっては、カナダの寒さに比べると大したことはないようで元気に発表をしてくれました。） Explaining about seasonal events on campus in Canada The students spoke enthusiastically about their four months in Canada. They got a lot from a variety of events held at Okanagan College, enjoyed cross-cultural experiences with homestay families and other homestay students, and improved their English ability, and confidence levels, too.（カナダでの4ヶ月間、それぞれの学生がオカナガン・カレッジでの学生生活やホストファミリーとの生活でかけがえのない経験や出会いを得ました。学生たちは英語力はもちろん、自信も身につけ、その成長は発表の様子からも伝わりました。） GO Program students explain about the multicultural nature of their program Our students on campus listened avidly and we are sure they were inspired by their senpai's experiences.（先輩たちの話は、他の学生たちにとって励みや刺激になったようです。） Thanks for your attention!
